Xarelto is a blood thinner (anticoagulant) prescribed to patients with an irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation) to prevent stroke, to patients with blood clots in their legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism) to dissolve those clots, and to patients who have recently had hip or knee replacement surgery to prevent blood clots from forming in their legs or lungs.
Xarelto can cause severe, uncontrolled internal bleeding in the stomach, intestines or the brain, requiring hospitalization, transfusion, and, in some cases, more long lasting injuries.

Why Are Patients Who Took Xarelto Filing Lawsuits?
Patients who took Xarelto and suffered uncontrolled bleeding are filing lawsuits for several reasons. First, Xarelto is sold without an antidote to stop bleeding. Thus, if a patient taking Xarelto has uncontrolled bleeding, doctors cannot stop the bleeding quickly and severe injuries can occur. On the other hand, warfarin, a blood thinner that has been in use since the 1950s and is less expensive, has an antidote that can be administered to stop a patient’s bleeding.
Second, Johnson & Johnson promoted Xarelto claiming that it did not require a patient to have blood tests to monitor his or her blood levels of the drug and that “no dosage adjustments” were necessary. The Food and Drug Administration warned J&J in 2013 that its advertisement was “false or misleading because it minimizes the risks associated with Xarelto and makes a misleading claim” about Xarelto. This is because there is good reason to believe that monitoring blood levels of Xarelto and adjusting dosages can protect patients from serious uncontrolled bleeding injuries.
There has been no Xarelto recall. Bayer continues to manufacture Xarelto and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Jannsen Pharmaceutical continues to sell Xarelto in the United States.
Is There a Xarelto Class Action Lawsuit?
There is no Xarelto class action lawsuit. The lawyers at Borri Law Offices are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of patients injured by Xarelto.
Have There Been any Xarelto Lawsuit Settlements
There have been no significant settlements of Xarelto lawsuits. This is due in part to the fact that the public is just learning that Xarelto was sold without an antidote to stop uncontrolled bleeding in patients.
There was, however, a settlement of $650 million for claim involving a similar blood thinner named Pradaxa that, like Xarelto, had no antidote to stop severe, uncontrolled internal bleeding and was sold without a recommendation that blood levels of Pradaxa be monitored and the dose adjusted to minimize the risk of uncontrolled bleeding.
